Age of cat estrus
The age of cat estrus is usually related to its breed, health and living environment. Most cats will enter their first estrus when they are 4 to 6 months old, but some cats may be a little later, especially some large cats may not enter estrus until they are 10 months old.
After sexual maturity, cats will enter estrus periodically, and this cycle usually lasts throughout their lives.
Cat estrus cycle
The estrus cycle of cats is divided into several stages, as follows:
Pre-estrus: This stage lasts 1 to 3 days, and cats begin to become affectionate, behave gently, and rub people or objects with their tails more frequently.
Estrus: This is the most obvious stage of the cat's estrus cycle, which lasts about 4 to 6 days. During this period, cats may show loud calls, courtship behaviors, lower their bodies, and lift their tails.
Post-estrus: If they have not mated, cats will enter post-estrus, which lasts 2 to 3 weeks. During this stage, cats will gradually return to normal and no longer show courtship behaviors.
Interlude: Outside of the breeding season, cats may not go into estrus for a period of time.
How to manage cats in estrus
1. Sterilization: Considering sterilization of cats is one of the effective ways to manage estrus. Sterilization can prevent unwanted pregnancies, reduce the number of stray cats, and also avoid a series of behavioral problems caused by estrus.
2. Provide a safe environment: Cats in estrus may try to escape from home to find a mate, so make sure the windows and doors of the house are safe to prevent cats from going out.
3. Increase companionship and play time: During the estrus period of the cat, increase the time of interaction with it and help it consume excess energy through play, which can alleviate the discomfort of estrus to a certain extent.
4. Use hormone therapy: Under the advice of a veterinarian, some hormone products can be used to help control the estrus behavior of cats, but this should be an option when other methods are not applicable.
Understanding the estrus age and cycle of cats is a basic responsibility for any cat owner. With appropriate management measures, the challenges brought by the estrus period of cats can be effectively addressed to ensure the happy coexistence of pets and family members.
Whichever management method is chosen, the most important thing is to ensure the health and safety of your cat, while taking into account the actual situation of the household and possible long-term consequences.
